Commander land count guide

How many lands should a Commander deck run?

Many Commander decks start around 36-38 lands, but the right number depends on curve, ramp, colors, card draw, and the speed of your table. Binderbrew checks land count as part of every deck confidence report.

Start at 36-38 lands

This range is a practical baseline for many EDH decks. It gives you enough mana sources without crowding out spells, then you tune from there.

Adjust for curve and ramp

A deck full of expensive spells needs more reliable mana. A lower-curve deck with many two-mana ramp pieces can often trim a land or two after testing.

Binderbrew compares the generated deck against land, ramp, and curve benchmarks so users can see whether the mana base looks stable before buying cards.

Common questions

Is 37 lands enough for Commander?

For many casual and focused Commander decks, 37 lands is a reasonable starting point. Decks with lower curves, more cheap ramp, or more card selection can sometimes run fewer; slower decks may need more.

Do mana rocks replace lands?

Not completely. Ramp helps, but lands are usually harder to remove and are needed to make opening hands functional. Binderbrew evaluates lands and ramp as related but separate deck roles.

How does color identity affect land count?

More colors usually require better fixing and more careful land choices. Five-color decks need different mana support than mono-color or two-color decks.
